The Corporation

I went to a screening last night of an incendiary new documentary film called The Corporation. I encourage you all to see this movie. It opens today at the Film Forum in NYC.

This funny and easily watchable movie explores the rise of corporations in America and features great interviews with Noam Chomsky, Michael Moore, Howard Zinn, and many CEOs in big business today. Here is an excerpt from their website:

One hundred and fifty years ago, the corporation was a relatively insignificant entity. Today, it is a vivid, dramatic and pervasive presence in all our lives. Like the Church, the Monarchy and the Communist Party in other times and places, the corporation is today's dominant institution. But history humbles dominant institutions. All have been crushed, belittled or absorbed into some new order. The corporation is unlikely to be the first to defy history.

Treating a corporation as a legal entity with the rights of an individual is one of the stranger developments in capitalism. Taking things one step further, the directors of The Corporation psychoanalyze these entities as if they actually were individuals. Based on the WHO's diagnostic criteria, the corporation (as individual) exhibits highly antisocial, callous, and deceitful behavior.
